How do Crane Hoists Work

Crane hoists are machines that are able to lift and carry heavy objects and loads from one place to another place, by using a drum or lift wheel that has either a rope or chain wrapped around it. Crane hoists can be classified into many different types according the way of operation, such as manual crane hoist, electronical crane hoist, or pneumatic crane hoist, etc. There are basically two unique things that distinguish a crane hoist from the many other types of lifting machines out there: the lifting medium and the type of power used. They adopt either wire, rope, or chains to lift and their power source is either an electric engine or an air motor.

Types of crane hoists

Construction crane hoist

Among types of crane hoists, the construction crane hoist is one type of hoist used for construction of large buildings, known as man-lift and buck hoist. The construction crane hoist usually consists of either one or two cages which travel up and down along a tower of stacked sections. Each section of mast is roughly 25 feet high, and it is important that they be added at these intervals in order to provide stability. Using a system of rack and pinion motorization, the cages are able to travel along the mast sections at various speeds.

Mining crane hoist

Mining crane hoist is a type of electric hoist, which can be used in underground mines. The mining crane hoist can be operated by using either man, water, or animal power and mostly electricity and are used to raise and lower conveyances into the shaft Electric hoist is the most frequently used hoist. Three different types of crane may be used for this type of operation: drum hoists, friction hoists, and multi-rope cranes.

Chain crane hoist and rope crane hoist

Most crane hoists in use today use are either chain or rope in their design. Those that use chains typically have a lever that actuates the hoist. There is a commonly used handheld model known as the ratchet lever hoist that is operated manually. One of the advantages of using this type is that they can be used in any orientation, whether pulling, lifting, or binding. When choosing between either rope or chain, remember that rope is more light weight but is limited by the drum diameter. Chains on the other hand are much larger and heavier.

One of the overhead hoists use rails which are located high above the ground. The overhead rail hoists are usually supported by a building or some other type of structure. The main advantage of the rail overhead hoist is that they are safely out of the way and do not cause an obstruction in the workplace. When speed and portability is an important issue, the truck mounted crane is the perfect choice. It can travel along the public roads so it can quickly move from one location to the next.

crane hoist operation safety lists

1. Do not exceed the safe load limit of electrichoist.
2. Maintain electrichoist ropes and chains lubricated.
3. crane hoist loads up from right over the loads or it may swing when lifting if not centered.
4. Place crane hoists in the highest part of hook area to make sure hook support is in line with hook shank directly.
5. Lever operated crane hoist can be pulled in any direction in a straight line. However, side pulling or lifting increase wear and stress on electrichoist parts.
   Pushing a loaded hoist is safer (A). If it must be pulled, use a rope (B)
6. To load the lower hook, place loads right in line with the hook shank to make sure load chain in a straight line from hook shank to hook shank.
7. Stand clear of load completely.
8. Place loads in the hook completely.
9. Move crane hoist controls smoothly to avoid abrupt and jerky movements of loads.
10. Make sure the sling and hoisting ropes from slacking before lifting.
11. Keep the loads from any loose material, parts, blocking and packing before lifting.
12. Make sure all people away from loads before lifting.
