Other types of crane hooks

Forging crane hook

The forging crane hook is made of high quality low carbon steel or low carboon alloy steel, such as, 20 high-quality low carbon steel, 16Mn,20MnSi,36MnSi, which is annealed after being forged.

The forging hook is simple to be manfactured and is easy to be operated however its stress condition is not as good as laminated hook. Therefore, the froging hook is usually used for handling loads below 80 tons. And double hooks will be adopted when come into handling heavey loads.

Laminated crane hook

Laminated crane hook is riveted through several pieces of steel plates. The laminated hook provides high safety for when one individual plate has flaws, the whole hook still can work without being damaged. With the features of high safety and large dead weight, laminated hook is usually used on large lifting capacity cranes, such as, steel ladle cranes, etc.

Crane hook maintenance

(1)Dismount all the Crane hook head, shaft, beam, pulley block, bearings, check the condition, clean and lubricate if necessary.

(2)Check the wear condition of the dangerous cross section.

(3)Test the crane hook.

(4)Check the condition of crane hook plate.

• Crack is not allowed on the crane hook, beam and pulley block. The screw cannot be loosened. The bearing should be in good condition. Rotate the pulley, if find out the cutter mark or crack on the tool escape, please change it.
• If the wear of the dangerous cross section is more than 10% compare to the original height, please change it.
• After the repairing, testing and checking is necessary for the crane hook. Hanging the 1.25 maltaple weight compare to lifting capacity in 10 minutes, the mouth of crane hook should be opened less than 0.25% compare to the original size. After unloading the deformation and crack are not allowed.
• After riveting for the crane hook plate, the gap between the plates should be less than 0.3 mm.

Crane Hook FAQ 1.What is the material of crane hook?

The crane hook is generally made of DG20 steel and DG34GrMo alloy steel, which is forged, pressed, annealed and then machined. It has the characteristics of high strength, good plasticity and toughness.
Flaps are generally used in places with large tonnage in high temperature environment.
The hook is usually made of A3, 20# or 16Mn steel plates with a thickness of not less than 20mm, without sudden fracture and with high reliability.

Once the hook is broken or cracked, it needs to be scrapped and buy hook accessories from the original the manufacturer. If not, the new hook accessories should be the same as the original one in terms of hook material, grade and specification, so as to avoid the occurrence of various accidents caused by the mismatch with the electric chain hoist.

Crane Hook FAQ 2.Crane hook rotation causes and preventive measures

Crane hook rotation is often happening without any warning occurred in the lifting motion, when the crane is lifting some weight, crane hook rotates, the wire rope between hook and pulley twisted together, so it will be the lifted weight, then the lifting operation have to be mid-stop. Crane hook rotation can affect the lifting operation, seriously threatening the safety of workers and equipment, therefore it must be avoided.

Crane hook rotation causes

The cause of crane hook rotation is mixed with the internal and external factors of crane. The internal cause is indeed the root cause of its occurrence.

Internal factors to crane hook rotation

Crane wire rope regardless of model, specifications, grades, will produce torque in the force. Torque is formed due to the manufacturing process of wire rope, first wires twist together to make a strand, and then several strands twist together making a rope. When there is force in the rope, the wire and the strand will be straightened, but the end of the wire rope is fixed, so it will produce a torque in the wire rope.

Another cause of the torque is the rope pitch becomes longer after a period of time usage, thus it makes torque in rope even there is no force in it, the existence of torque makes the hook rotate.

External factors to crane hook rotations

On the other hand there are many external factors that directly lead to the rotation of hook, such as the human or wind force during the hoisting process.

The operator is not steady moving the crane so that the hook and the weight swing cause the hook rotation, the unbalance of hook etc.

Preventive measures to crane hook rotations

In order to avoid the crane hook rotation happens, the operator should move the crane steadily and smoothly, the hook should be located at the center of lifting material, at the motion of lifting first makes the wire rope straight then lift material up, and yearly re-fix the wire rope to make sure it is free and no force in it when there is no load.

Note: One thing should be noted is that when there is twisting in wire rope the lifting motion should be stopped immediately, otherwise it may cause damage to crane even maybe a dangerous factor for the nearby workers.

Crane Hook FAQ 3. Why can’t the hoist hook to be repaired by welding?

Because the hook once be repaired by welding, it is difficult to meet the principle of quality standards, the whole process of which includes melting, fusion, and curing, etc.

During repairing, due to the heat transfer effect, the basic part of the hook is affected by heating and cooling effect of different levels, just as heat treatment, resulted in the changes of formation and essence. What’s more, the welding is usually done on the wear and sag places of hook which is in a straight line with the vertical critical section.
The welding destroys the metal structure and metal fiber sequence of the hook, destroys the toughness of the hook, thereby reducing the performance of the hook and affecting the performance of the electric chain hoist.

Crane Hook FAQ 4. Crane hook supervision and inspection 

Crane Hook is a very important type of lifting devices, which has played an important role in types of cranes and hoists and the quality of the lifting hook is directly related to the safety of personal and property. To prevent the occurring of the hook fracture failure accidents, the supervision over the quality of the hook and the hook inspection should be strengthened.

Supervision of new hooks entering the factory

• Review the material certificate of the hook, heat treatment report and other quality assurance documents, and require the manufacturing factory to carry out production in strict accordance with GB 10051-1988, and the raw materials of the crane hook should be among the 5 materials specified in the standard.
• Check the surface of the hook to ensure it is smooth and clean, without cracks, sharp angles, burrs, peeling and other defects;
• There should be no cracks, white spots or inclusions in the hook.
• Measure the original shape and weight of the hook and save it for the next check.

Inspections in use of hooks

• Non-destructive testing shall be carried out on the parts where the stress is concentrated. When the cracks are detected, the crane hook should be stopped in use immediately and replaced by a new lifting hook.
• The abrasion or corrosion of the dangerous section of the hook should be inspected regularly. When the actual size of the lifting hook is less than 95% of the original one, the crane hook should be replaced.
• When the deformation of the hook opening reaches 15% of the original size, the crane hook should be replaced.
•  Welding is not allowed for the lifting hook.
• Dangerous section or hook handle must not have plastic deformation.

Lifting hook is a wearing part and the frequently used accessory in machinery factory, which may cause serious person and equipment accident extremely easily, once fracture and fall accident occurred. Thus, pay more attention on crane hook safety, quality supervision and regular inspection.

Crane Hook FAQ 5. When the crane hook should be stopped in use?

Lifting hook is an important accessories of electric hoist. Due to the heavy loading in the use of lifting, the fatigue crack may occur, and hoist inspection is needed at least 1 to 3 times a year, regular annealing treatment is also needed, to ensure the safety of operation and to extend the life of the hook.

In the following cases, the hook to be discarded and replaced:

• 1. Use a 20x magnifying glass to observe the surface of the hook, the cracked or broken hook should be replaced.
• 2. For the critical section of hook, when wearing more than 10% , it cannot be used any longer.
• 3. The hook should be replaced when permanent deformation occurs during loading testing.
• 4. The hook should be replaced when the end or the thread part of the hook has cracks or deformation.
• 5. The hook should be replaced when the transition corner of hook end has fatigue cracks.
