Crane Gearbox Leak Causes and Control Methods

Crane gearbox is one of the most important parts of crane power transmission. Crane gearbox affects the sizing, loading, traveling and operating of overhead cranes. When crane gearbox leaks, it will result in serious crane gearbox failure and may result in crane accidents. To ensure your crane safety, the possible causes to crane gearbox leak are analyzed and related control methods are presented for your sake.

Causes to crane gearbox leakage

1. The pressure difference inside and outside crane gearbox

During gearbox operating, due to deputy campaign of friction heat and the affecting of ambient temperature, the gear temperature rise up, If there are no holes or holes blocked, the pressure gradually increase, the higher the internal temperature, the greater the pressure difference with the outside world, the lubricant leak from the crevice under the pressure.

2. Unreasonable structural design

  • Access plate is too thin, easy to be deformed after tightening the bolts, which will make the bonding surfaces uneven, leak from the crevice.
  • During gearbox manufacturing, gear is without heat treatment, thus there is inside stress not eliminated, and inevitable deformation will lead to crevices and leakage
  • No Return chute is designed on the gearbox shell, Lubricating oil accumulated in the seal, cover, binding surface, etc., leak will happen due to the pressure difference
  • Unreasonable sealing structure design, at the very first time, crane gearbox is designed with oil groove, felt ring type seal structure, the deformation of felt as assembly seals the joint crevice, if the seal joint is not very good, the seal will be at failure in a very short time cause of the seal’s poor performance at compensation. Although there is holes on oil groove, it is too easily blocked to fulfill the role of oil return.

3. Excessive amount of oil

During gearbox operating, oil tank is agitated badly, lubrication oil splashes inside the gearbox, If the refuel over amount, large numbers of lubricating oil accumulate in seals, joint surface, etc., resulting in leaks.

4. Improper repair process

Upon gearbox maintenance, leaks will happen due to joint surface dirt remove not completely or improper sealant selection, seals direction hold reverse, untimely maintenance etc.

Methods to control leakage

1. Balance pressure

Improve access plate and breathable cap, the main reason of leakage is pressure difference inside and outside the gearbox. If pressure balanced can be achieved, leakage will be stopped. The gearbox oil holes is too small to be blocked by coal, dirt etc. It is required to open the hole cover at every refueling, the more frequently refueling the more possibility of leakage. Thus the oil cup type cap is designed, and thicken the access plate to 6mm, then welding the cap on the plate to achieve the balanced pressure. Also the refueling can be through the cap instead of opening it, decreasing the leakage possibility.

2. Smooth flow

In order to make sure the lubricant not accumulate in the shaft seal, some method should be done to make the lubricant flow in a certain direction, the method is called smooth flow. Specific approach is to open an oil groove under the bearing, at the same time, open a gap which is directly lead to the groove at the end cover, thus the extra lubricant will flow through the groove and cap smoothly.

3. Using new sealing material

Use novel polymer material as a seal to block the leakage, if the leakage happen in the static sealing point among gearbox operation, 2555 and 90T novel polymer material can be used to prove the leakage.

4. Seriously implement maintenance technology

Among gearbox maintenance, the engineer should strictly follow the requested process, sealing cannot be held reverse, rim should not be at any damage, outer edge no deformation, joint points should be clean up without any dirt, fuel quantity should be within the rated amount.

5. Wiping

The leakage can be settled after the improvement of the static sealing point. But due to multiply reasons, the dynamic sealing point is easily to happen with leakage. That is the reason that cleaning up is very necessary to wipe the dirt among gearbox operating stopped.
