Crane collapse is a kind of serious crane accident, which should be prevented by all means to ensure the crane safety and the safety of people. How to prevent the crane collapse? It is a question should be aware by all crane related workers or serious damages will be resulted.

Lots of crane collapses have been reported around the world, ringing us the bell that the crane safety should be strengthened to nip the potential danger in the bud. How to prevent crane collapse? What safety measures should be taken to prevent crane from collapsing? According to the professional crane engineers and safety specialists, Dongqi Crane gives out the following suggestions on crane collapse prevention for your reference.

How to prevent crane collapse

  • 1. The road of crane traveling must be flat, solid, and reliable and the parking place must be flat too.
  • Underground soft soil and excavation need to be tamped and reinforced, solid road surface should be flat and if necessary, crane traveling parts need to lay sleepers, sub grade boxes or thick steel plate track.
  • 2.Lashing member slings, rings should be calculated, the use of lifting gear should be inspected and checked regularly and for damages which should be exchanged. Banding method should be correct, reliable, to prevent the sling from slipping or breaking member when lifting so that the crane suddenly weightless and tipping.
  • 3.The large vertical member must be identified by weight and lashing reliable. When weight is unknown, lashing member is not strong it cannot be lifting, to avoid causing the crane arm broken.
  • 4.When lifting member, the sling should be kept vertical and shall not exceed the radius of gyration oblique tow, and so as not to overload, rope slip or pull off, so that the crane will be instability. When lifting heavy member, rope should be located to pull. When the crane is vertical the arm lifting, lowering, rotating should be smooth and could not sway in the air, at the same time should try to avoid emergency braking or impact vibration phenomenon. The crane cannot lift things with unreliable technical measures, such as the rear plus a crane counterweight, the crane pulling back wind cable rope. Without the approval of the relevant technical departments, it shall not lifting. Overload of crane is prohibited, so as not to accelerate wear of mechanical parts and causing the crane collapse.
  • 5.Cranes should try to avoid driving at full capacity, when at full load or near full capacity, two actions lifting and rotating ca (moving or lifting and horizontal lifting and walking) n not work in the same time, so as to avoid uneven roads or inertial force and other reasons, caused crane overload and lead to a crane collapse accident. Hanging member such as for short-distance travel, the member should go to the front of the crane, lifting height from the ground member is not more than 50 cm, pulling rope slide, avoid swinging, and keep slow driving.
  • 6.When operating two cranes at the same time the lifting materials on the hook should keep a safe distance more than 5 meters avoiding the impact.
  • 7.In the lifting process, such as a power failure or mechanical failure and other reasons which cause interrupted job, you must take measures, and can not keep the member in the air.
  • 8.When lifting, there should be someone in charge of the unified command. Commanding officers should be located in the operator's vision range and can clearly see the whole process of lifting. Crane drivers must be familiar with the signal, according to commanding officers’ various signals to operate, comply with site procedures, obey orders, and not allowed to leave their posts. Command signal should be unified regulations in advance, and Commanding officers send the signals which should be clear and accurate.

The above suggestions are given for your reference to prevent crane collapse. However, according to individual situation of crane application, cut-to-tailed crane safety measures should be adopted.
